Gateway Family Ride to Thameside Nature Park – Ride Report

Gateway Family Ride to Thameside Nature Park – Ride Report

There was a good turnout at Hardie Park for the start of the ride. No doubt this was helped by the warm and sunny weather. The ride along quiet roads and cycle trails soon took us to the mid way point at the Thameside Nature Park where we stopped off at the visitors centre for  coffee and cake as well at a chat. All too soon we were on our bikes again riding along the bridleway up … Read entire article »

Gateway Velodrome Session

Gateway Velodrome Session

There was a great turnout for the Gateway session at the Velodrome last Wednesday, I think I counted 17 riders. For some, it was a real training session and for others it was a first try out on the track. The 17 were split into two groups, the “confident ones” and the “less confident ones”, as defined by the Velodrome instructors. Instruction from the staff was clear and encouraging and there were lots of very sweaty … Read entire article »

From Jon Lane. A really good GWC – Cycling ‘blue’ turnout today, bright and sunny, a well organised event by the Rotary Club – a Big Thanks to them! Mid Week Ride This Week

Eight riders plus one car assisted out today. Although cloudy and overcast when we started conditions proved ideal for cycling even the roads had mostly dried after yesterdays heavy rain. Only one incident of dangerous driving this week when C.M had to remonstrate vigorously with a motorist who tried to run us off the road because of their inability to drive sensibly in heavy traffic. One of our newer recruits Taff completed the whole loop for the first time after only a few rides with us and has improved his riding very quickly. After a leisurely lunch we upped the pace and made a quick return to Orsett. Whilst having a last chat we were joined by an old acquaintance who kept me talking for nearly 2 hours but thats another story. Arrived … Read entire article »

Bob’s mid week ride to Kent

Bob’s mid week ride to Kent

We were lucky enough to have two submissions from our club members for this ride. Both the ride leader, Jon L, and the venerable Bob have both written about Bob’s Wednesday group ride across the river into Kent. Rather than choose one over the other, or mash them together into one edit, we’ve put both of them below with a few photos taken during this ride and the recce ride by Chris G and Phil … Read entire article »

Sunday Ride 20th May 2018

Sunday Ride 20th May 2018

In addition to the early group who met at 8 o’clock and headed off to Southend, there was a good turn out of 21 riders on this sunny May Sunday morning. We were fortunate enough to have leaders for 3 groups for the 9.00 O’clock  riders, and the pre ride chat that described the expected average speeds was really helpful. The groups left at one minute intervals, which seemed to work well, and the faster group, … Read entire article »

Bob Drake’s 80th birthday

Bob Drake’s 80th birthday

At the Gateway Club Night last Friday, we celebrated Bob Drake’s 80th birthday. Bob, his membership number is No.2, has been with the club since its inception and many of you will have ridden with him over the years. Bob’s mid week ride, starting at 10.00 every Wednesday at Orsett, with a stop at the Puddle Duck cafe, has become part of Gateway Cycling “folklore”. He is an inspiration to us, long may he continue. … Read entire article »

Along the Lee Valley

Four of us meet up at Grays station for the ride; Jon, Matt, Sharon and myself. Two train journeys later we were cycling along the Lee Valley towpath heading northwards At Enfield we steered away from the canal and rode through Meridian Park to Waltham Abbey. If we had had more time then we may have stopped to have a look about this historic town. Instead as the weather was so nice we continued into the … Read entire article »

Gateway Girls Travers Triumph

On Sunday 22nd April was the first round of this year’s Travers MTB series and we had two Gateway riders from our Saturday morning coaching session taking part, Ellie and Kinley. This was their first ever cycle race and both of them did fantastically well, both winning third place in their categories. Visit to the Greedy Chef Café April 2018

As usual for the last few weeks the Saturday was fine and sunny but Sunday 15th April was cool and cloudy. Eight of us set off from Bulphan on a gentle recreation ride, Frances H, Jon, Sharon, Dave, Bert , Steve, Matt and Caroline. Heading through Laindon and Basildon we reached North Benfleet. The cafe is on Pound Lane which we rode up and down a few times until we located the cafe. The cafe itself is very … Read entire article »
