Recreational Ride – SUNDAY 8th August 2021

At Barking station Sharon, Dave and I met with Terry, Roy and Chris G. Chris’s first ride with our small group… Heavy summer rain pouring down though not too windy or cold. Carefully we picked our way through the wet terraced back roads to the ‘Boris Blue Route’ running beside the A13 leading to Beckton. Here with Dave’s expert guidance and safe easy riding, we rode through green parklands on to an early coffee stop beside the complex of the ExCel Centre. Here, slurping our drinks, we watched many thousands of valiant runners and riders of the London Triathlon, all shapes and sizes, an inspirations following the Olympics and our restrictions – some normality returning… Onward through the East End to Limehouse, the Yurt café for poached eggs on toast under the awnings, the rain easing a little now. Refreshed, it was over Tower Bridge a left turn and heading east, the wind behind us and with the sun breaking through. Some super new blue cycle routes now making it so much safer and faster for riders. Off at historic Greenwich. Here a few narrow pathways led us around to the 02 Arena with its towering developments and wide watery views. On and on beside the river, passing the silver Thames Barrier to the Woolwich crossing. Everyone through the foot tunnel to Barking and homeward. For me though one of my favourite riverside runs down to Dartford and the crossing to home. A super day in great company – thanks folks. We started with rain and finished in sunshine – a summer cycling story. Until the next time, Cheers! 🙂
