Sunday 25th August Gateway ride to the Blue Egg

From Mark Woolven

9 riders set off from Bulphan at 8.30 on a long route to the Blue Egg. We made our way to Warley, which was a nice start to the ride climbing the hills to get to south Weald. Then we followed the lanes to North Weald, and we were soon on our way to stansted. We followed some great quiet lanes with some lovely views. By time time we got to Thaxted the heat was getting to us and we needed to stop for water breaks and to get our breath back.
We got to the Blue Egg at 11.45 and had a well earned lunch break. We sat outside in the sun eating our lunch, which I must say is always fantastic from this Cafe! All home made.
Once we were fed and watered we were ready for the return home. The temperature was up to about 31c with a head wind. I definitely had Cafe legs for for the start of the ride home, we got down to Felsted quite quickly. The group got split up at ford end because some missed the turn off, Simon chased them down and they turned around and got back with us. Water and rest break under the trees before setting off again.
From Ford End to Writtle was a bit of a slog, the heat had got to me and I’m sure it got to the group by this time.
We had to do a bit of off road which was quite entertaining. When we got to Writtle we stopped at the M&S garage for a well earned stop to get the water bottles filled up for the last part of the ride.
Clint and Simon took big turns on the front to get us back to Dunton, where I turned off to go home.
Everybody got home ok, very tired but happy they did this ride.
Next time I do this route I think it needs to be a little bit cooler. Big thank you to all that came on this ride.
