Vic Gibbons 1953 TT Bike

Vic Gibbons 1953 TT Bike

This is the actual bike on which local (Corringham) rider Vic Gibbons won the 1953 British Time Trial Championship. Vic won again in 1955 and was second several times. He also won British Best All-Rounder 1953 and 1954.

His team, from the Brentwood Road Club, also won many national Time Trial Championships. One of his team, Richard Spanton was also local, living all his life in Grays.

Vic died some years ago, in his seventies, and Dick died recently in his early eighties while still living in Finchley Road, Grays. To my knowledge these were the two most successful bike racers to come from Thurrock.

Nice article, and great to see that Essex has some great bike history.

Not sure if I would fancy riding the fixed gear bike in TT’S! Real men ride fixed:)
