Tale of a bespoke bike frame

A couple of years ago I started selling off part of my collection of vintage bikes mainly to make some room in the garage, having reached a manageable level I decided I would spend the accumulated monies on one last bespoke frame. I have had two previous steel frames built both by a builder in the north of England but thought it would be nice if I could find someone local. I was directed by Richardsons  cycles to a builder in Ramsden Heath conveniently situated on route to Hanningfield. I met Mark there last November where I was quoted for a columbus steel frame loosely based on my current Specialised Paris Roubais model.Due to three other customers before me I was given a rough delivery date of late April this year which … Read entire article »

Midweek Ride 11th March

Thirteen riders assembled at Orsett today, after short discussion on advisability of group cafe stops in the wake of the current virus situation it was unanimously decided to carry on as usual for the moment but of course not take any unnecessary risks and review situation as time progresses. The weather today was good for riding except for the wind which although not of a too dangerous nature made for some hard riding in some directions.Usual split into groups of slightly different pace, from a personal point of view I managed to hang on the back of a group consisting of Bert,Phil and Andy, this is getting to be my usual back marker place these days, only to be expected I suppose as the end game must surely be approaching.Much chat over a … Read entire article »

Midweek Ride Today March 3rd

Eleven riders took part in todays regular wednesday  social ride.We were soon split into several small groups spread over the Berwich Ponds route /As I was near the back I was lucky to have ride buddy Vic D hang back and drag me round the circuit .Everyone arrived eventually at cafe stop where lively chat ensued over early lunch .No one seemed to be in a hurry to leave but as some rain was forecast we dragged ourselves back onto the lanes for return to Orsett. Split up again I this time managed to hang on to the wheel of Noel E who graciously towed me all the way back to start point where we just managed to beat the rain.Once again we have been very lucky with the weather … Read entire article »

Midweek Ride 1st Jan 2020

As there seems to be some confusion about this wednesdays ride the position is this. The OFFICIAL Gateway ride this wednesday is now the Annual New Years Day Ride details of which have already been published more than once. The reason for this is because from the first year of its inception Gateway CC has always had a social ride on New Years Day AND THIS YEAR IT JUST  HAPPENS TO FALL ON A WEDNESDAY.This does not stop any of you wishing to do some other ride this week from doing so.Next week hopefully all will return to normal. YEAR END RANDOM THOUGHTS

From Bob D Greetings all,as 2019 nears its end just a few random thoughts on the cycling year as seen by yours truly, nothing planned ,just as they come into my head as I sit here resting after todays ride.Thinking back to last spring the AGM comes to mind when the usual difficulty of replacing some important club officers cropped up again Fortunately  some stirling volunteers stepped into the breech and with those still standing ( THANKS ) forming a new committee which seems to to be working well. Usual weekend and midweek rides have continued successfully through the year the only downside being the end of the official weekly time trial  although a few members have continued on a self timed basis.A group of enthusiasts once again ventured over to Spain … Read entire article »

Last Wednesday Ride 2019

From Bob D. Today was the last Wednesday group ride for 2019, twelve members made it to the cafe stop arriving around 1115,having just sat down we were joined by Charlie Milhouse,an ex member who moved away three years ago.Charlie was just driving by having  just made a delivery when he saw the gateway blue train entering Puddle dock so decided to call in and join us.For those who dont him Charlie is a very experienced life long cyclist who was an asset to the club when he was with us and I was very pleased to see him again. Merry Christmases were wished all round as we split up for home which brings me the next items. As next Wednesdaqy is Christmas day the usual official midweek ride is cancelled … Read entire article »

Midweek Ride 4th Dec

Inspite of forecast low temperature seven riders assembled at Orsett today for 10 am departure to Puddledock via Berwich Ponds loop.We managed to stay together as one group at a sensible pace ,not as fast as usual but not particularly slow either, ice on the puddles but the lanes perfectly safe mostly dry with a bit of dampness in the shady areas.Arrived safely at cafe where met Tina who had made way there solo by bike and three more members by car. Pleased to see Joe back with us today as he hasnt been able to make it for a few weeks.Split into three groups for return and the four of us who returned to Orsett enjoyed trouble free trip in glorious sunshine and a balmy 8 degrees.I think we … Read entire article »

Midweek Ride Today

No report last week as although usual good turnout nothing of particular note or out of the ordinary took place so did’nt want to bore you unduly with the mundane. Much the same could be said again this week but here goes anyway.Fourteen members out today soon split into a medium size group and a couple of small groups on the road.Unfortunately Tina suffered a puncture at the start so with Chris G made straight for cafe after making repairs.I made up a double act with Phil B who pulled me whole way round outward leg at around 15mph and we were last to cafe stop.I understand the fastest group averaged nearly 19 mph with the others in between.Puddledock very busy again today so a table of ten  another of … Read entire article »
