Bobs Blog

For those unfamiliar with the clubs activities I would like to say just a few words about the longest continuously running club ride. This is now known as the midweek social ride run on wednesdays throuhgout the year only ever cancelled due to  exceptually bad weather. The route is usually a 28 ml loop from Orsett to Berwich Ponds and back with a brunch stop at the excellent Puddledock Farm cafe. Occasionally someone will organise an alternative to a pub lunch in Kent which involves a ferry crossing to Gravesend. This ride has run continuously for many years and was originally known as the Airfield ride as the brunch stop was at the then excellent cafe at Damyns Hall airfield which was an interesting venue as aerial activities were often … Read entire article »

Bobs Blog

Hi me again, first off no one seemed to have picked up the deliberate mistake in my last post,it was of course Mathieu van de Poel not Remco Evenpool who won the mens world championship road race in Glasgow last week but there you go. After yesterdays successful midweek ride decided to stay home today to give my most used road bike a bit of maintenance and a clean up. Not being too energetic I try to make this as easy as possible, I start by brushing off all the visible crud then a quick wipe over with a proprietory wd 40 bike cleaner. Then comes the bit I like least degreasing the chain and cleaning up the jockey wheels, this done relube chain with a foaming wet lube and wipe … Read entire article »

Blogging Again by Bob Drake

After a long layoff, just a few words of cycling relevance. From a club perspective the leisure group goes from strength to strength with varied rides every sunday ably led Dave F and the Wednesday social group has maintained a strong turnout throughout the year. A few riders are now doing some longer sunday rides mainly initiated by Stephen and Ron, while Peter,Alan& co are participating in charity rides and organising Quiz and curry nlghts. In a wider sphere, there has been some wonderful racing to watch this year with the TDF the  best edition for some time. The mens World Championship road race from Edinburgh  to Glasgow had a bit of everything and super solo winner in the Dutchman Remco Evenpool. Club night takes place on the second friday … Read entire article »

Tale of a Bespoke Bike Frame. End Of.

Tale of a Bespoke Bike Frame. End Of.

After 9 months in the making, this project finally came to an end when I collected finished BIKE today. Everyone involved were very pleased with final result even considering the odd compromise which had to be made. As I said from the start the whole job was completed locally within 30 miles of home which I am very pleased about. Thanks go to frame builder Mark Groves, spray artist John Callaghan and bike builders  at … Read entire article »

Tale of a Bespoke Bike Frame Update

Just a few facts about my project. When the idea for this project started I wanted to keep it as local as possible, well the frame was built by Mark from Leigh-on-sea Essex, is being painted as we speak by John from Maldon Essex and will be built up with American and Japanese components sourced by Richardsons Cycles also of Leigh-on-sea Essex so am quite pleased with myself for having all done within 30 miles of home and hopefully as good a quality job as anywhere in the world. To be continued. Tale of a bespoke bike frame

A couple of years ago I started selling off part of my collection of vintage bikes mainly to make some room in the garage, having reached a manageable level I decided I would spend the accumulated monies on one last bespoke frame. I have had two previous steel frames built both by a builder in the north of England but thought it would be nice if I could find someone local. I was directed by Richardsons  cycles to a builder in Ramsden Heath conveniently situated on route to Hanningfield. I met Mark there last November where I was quoted for a columbus steel frame loosely based on my current Specialised Paris Roubais model.Due to three other customers before me I was given a rough delivery date of late April this year which … Read entire article »

Midweek Ride 11th March

Thirteen riders assembled at Orsett today, after short discussion on advisability of group cafe stops in the wake of the current virus situation it was unanimously decided to carry on as usual for the moment but of course not take any unnecessary risks and review situation as time progresses. The weather today was good for riding except for the wind which although not of a too dangerous nature made for some hard riding in some directions.Usual split into groups of slightly different pace, from a personal point of view I managed to hang on the back of a group consisting of Bert,Phil and Andy, this is getting to be my usual back marker place these days, only to be expected I suppose as the end game must surely be approaching.Much chat over a … Read entire article »
