October Recreation Rides

For those of you interested in local recreational rides we have a couple for you to put in you calendar.  The first is a Gateway Cycling ride and the second Sustrans.

6th October – Gateway Recreation Ride: Canvey Island
Meet at Benfleet Station car park 10.30am.

This autumn ride will take in extensive views of the Thames estuary with the possibility of seeing some of the migrating birds that visit the area.

Included in the ride is a visit to ‘Canvey Heights’ and the RSPB site of ‘West Canvey Marsh’. There will also be a stop at Canvey sea front for a refreshment/comfort break.

The ride will take place mainly ‘off road’ around the sea wall, although some parts will be ridden on cycle paths and the road. Hybrid and Mountain Bikes are most suited for this ride. The ride will be taken at a leisurely pace of about 8/9mph, with the total distance of 12/14 miles.

As with all Gateway recreation rides, please make  ensure that you are familiar with the ride rules before taking part: www.gatewaycycling.org.uk/recreation-ride-rules

14th October – Sustrans Family Ride and Open Day: Davy Down
On Sunday the 14th October Davy Down will be hosting its Art in the Park and Family Activity Day. Your local Sustrans rangers will be leading a family ride along the Mardyke Valley bridleway.

We will be departing at 2:00 pm from the car park next to the Davy Down visitors centre. This ride is suitable for all ages and abilities and is confined to the Bridleway, so no riding near roads.

Riders are responsible for their own bicycles, which should be in a road worthy condition.

Though not required we do recommend that riders do wear a helmet, especially children.  We also encourage you to wear bright conspicuous clothing as it helps everyone be seen.

Standard open day activities include pond dipping, nature walks, water vole spotting. You can also meet some snakes and our gigantic American bullfrogs. There is the opportunity to learn where your drinking water comes from, tour the historic Pumping Station and find out about the industrial heritage of Thurrock.

Both of these events can also be found in the Event Calendar and Upcoming Recreation Rides.
