BIKE WEEK ROUND UP

Following Bike Week, 11th to 19th June, here are just a couple of the Gateway Cycling events during the week…

LAKESIDE

On Tuesday 14th a few of us manned a stand at Lakeside Thurrock where we distributed leaflets and advice to the passing shoppers. We were not overwhelmed but we had a trickle of interest and some interesting conversations. Alongside us were Evans Cycles with a display of varies bikes and details of their ‘Bike to Work’ info’. We all worked well together and the Evans team, with Jessica to the left in the picture and Steve to the right. Jamie, the local Evans Cycle’s Manager, kindly offered a 10% discount to Gateway Club members, subject to conditions – which I’ll post on the website. A big thanks to Bob D, Richard E and Dave F and his trusty Sus -Trans Rangers, Ruth and Roger for helping out on the day. Finally, thanks to Mat Kiely and the Lakeside Management Team for allowing us to use their facilities to promote our Club – Gateway Cycling – free of charge.

RECREATION RIDE – STANFORD TO MUCKING.

Wednesday 15th, ten of us met up at the newly transformed, Hardie Park at Stanford le Hope to ride to Mucking. The senior rider was 78 alongside the junior, 6 years old… We could not have asked for better weather, a balmy breeze, with fluffy clouds in a blue sky as we pedalled the back paths and by-ways. We got to the Essex Wildlife Visitors Centre (EWVC) for tea and ice cream – the incentive for some – with good chat and vistas across the Thames to enjoy. The determination and enthusiasm of the children, negotiating the pot holes and puddles of Rainbow Lane – and more – was an inspiration. We are grateful to Lee-Ann and her volunteers at EWVC for keeping the Centre open especially for us. Last but not least, thanks to Dave F for organising this and the support from Frances, Tom and Jeff B and also Bob D for making this one of our most enjoyable Bike Week rides.
