Recreation Ride to Kent 25th May 2013

The weather was breezy but otherwise quite mild as we met up on the landing at Tilbury for the short crossing over to Gravesend.

The first part of the journey was quite flat but the hills started after Lower Higham.

We had a short stop at Upnor Castle with its views over the River Medway.

From there it was a short ride into the historic centre of Rochester.

By now it was just after mid-day and we made our way to a pub and had some refreshments. Then we rode the few hundred metres up to the castle which overlooks by the city.

All too soon we were back on our bikes cycling along the cycle path that runs along the A2 slowly climbing our way up on our way to Shorne Woods Country Park. This park is 288 acres in size, but the most important things for us cyclists were the cafeteria.

Despite the clouds it was getting warmer.

The next stretch of the route was much more level as we made our way to the Cyclopark outside Gravesend.

Finally we headed back through the busy roads into Gravesend to take the ferry back to Tilbury.

The puncture fairy was kind to us and the only minor mishap was Bob’s chain slipping off his bike as he changed gear.

The distance travelled was about 22 miles with a few steep hills.

All in all a very enjoyable day.
