Mid week ride today

From Bob D. A fine turnout of fifteen today ,fourteen members plus Ricardo hopefully a prospective Member, I think he enjoyed his first trip with us.Usual split into several small groups and even slight variation in routes due to road works in the Corbetts Tey area but all arriving safely at the cafe for early lunch.Chatting round the table on these occasions can become quite animated at times and I love to hear the diverse ideas and opinions expressed by our motley crew.Homeward bound we split again with the Orsett bound group finally regrouping again by the Whitmore for a final chew over the days events and some club gossip before heading for home and in my case for well deserved feet up in front of the fire. Long may this … Read entire article »

WEDNESDAY ‘EQUINOX’ RIDE 20 3 19

From Jon Lane. The earth tilts and everything changes… it’s the spring equinox today – with fifteen riders meeting at Orsett. No ice, rain or wind to speak of this week, we set out around the regular circuit, the faster folk taking the lead. Surprisingly, (or unsurprisingly?) for he’s a wiley old rider… Bob D was up there in the peloton with the best (-: At the back Melvin R and me chatted most of our way around the lanes, taking the slightly shorter Sunnings Lane cut through and back to the Cafe. It was like a ‘respectful’ invasion of Puddle Dock, tables and chairs shoved together with good natured banter and gossip – the racket was like a school dinner hall – good grub, great stuff… The big question was: … Read entire article »

Velodrome Session

Velodrome Session

Thanks to Charlotte for arranging an exciting night out at the Velodrome. I think there were 16 riders plus one walking “wounded” and a couple of spectators. We rode in two groups, the confident group and a slightly less confident group. We received excellent instruction and the fast boys even tried that slightly bizarre race method, called the madison. All in all a great evening. … Read entire article »

Air Ambulance CPR Session

Air Ambulance CPR Session

At our March Club Night Tony Stone and Adam Carr from Essex & Herts Air Ambulance gave an informative and lively talk and demonstration to 30 Gateway Club members. Following a presentation, we practised CPR on manikins and then listened to an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) instruct us humans what to do. Luckily the AED’s were not really giving “shocks” and no one was hurt during this demonstration ? For some of us this was a welcome refresher … Read entire article »

Mid week ride 6th March 2019

From Bob D. What a difference a week makes,no sunny springlike weather today, just back to grey, damp and windy typical march like weather. However a good turnout of 12 riders set off from Orsett for usual jaunt round the the local lanes with the excellent Puddledock the designated lunch stop. Apart from a road closure causing a little bit of walking round the obstruction plus the strong cross and sometimes head winds everyone eventually arrived ready for early lunch taken inside this week.Homeward bound the wind made for quite a tough ride but the forecast rain held off long enough for most people to have made it home dry. Club night is this coming friday and it is important we have a good turnout as The Air Ambulance people are coming to demonstrate … Read entire article »

Reminder – Club Night 8th March CPR session

A date for your diary! Come along to club night on March 8th where trainers from Essex and Herts Air Ambulance will be carrying out a CPR awareness training session. This is a great opportunity for you to be shown how to do CPR in the comfort of our usual venue  Orsett  Churches Centre  and to practice on a dummy. They will also be bringing some defibrillators to show us how to use those devices we often see in stations, by village halls and in disused telephone boxes. If you have already been on a first aid course, this is an opportunity to refresh your skills, if you haven’t done CPR before, now is your chance to learn. You never know when a friend, relative, work colleague or even a cycling … Read entire article »

Mid week ride today 27th February 2019

From Bob D. How lucky to be out riding in this record breaking February weather, warm, wall to wall sunshine and hardly any wind, as near perfect conditions for cycling as it gets especially as its still technically winter. Ten riders again this week albeit 50% different personnel from last week, nice to see Andy, Joe and Paul back after several weeks absence. Usual split on outward run but all coming together nicely at cafe stop.Long lunch break outside in the sunshine followed by brisk return led by Dave R on his new super bespoke TI USA built SEVEN bike.Today will probably go down as the best winter weather conditions ever for the Gateway wednesday ride which is in its seventh year to date. Midweek ride Wednesday 20th February

From Bob D Nine riders plus one by car again this week, a fairly constant number for this time of year although the personnel changes week by week mainly due to group members taking winter sports holidays etc.As usual small groups soon formed on the road one of three very fast indeed actually beating those of us who took a short cut to the cafe stop, this being a first in my memory going back several years.Chat this week included a proposal from JL that if the weather holds we make a repeat run out to the pub in Upnor Kent in the very near future,so keep an eye out for this.I have to say this was one of our most enjoyable rides last year especially the beer and the food. The weather … Read entire article »
