Gateway’s donation to Thameside Nature Park

Beautiful day for a ride to Thameside (Mucking) Visitor Centre to hand over a pump and emergency repair kit to be left on site. Jon Lane also present. The closure of the Orsett Cock roundabout and part of the old A13 actually made it a quieter ride. … Read entire article »

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU!!!

Some of you may have heard that, after 4 years, I will be standing down as Treasurer of Gateway Cycling at the 2022 AGM. This is one of three mandatory officer posts within the club. Please remember – NO Treasurer, NO club! No “qualifications” are required to be treasurer, you don’t need to be an accountant, although some knowledge of Microsoft Excel would be useful and you will be given every assistance from me and previous occupants of the post. To make the transition easier I would suggest “shadowing” the role from late 2021. So as Bob Drake said recently “ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club”. A British Cycling “job description” can be found on the Gateway website, click here and if you … Read entire article »

Sunday Recreational Ride Report – Sunday 30th May

Sunday Recreational Ride Report – Sunday 30th May

From the start at Blackshots the weather was cloudy but as the day progressed the sun warmed us and we chatted and got to know one another. Our route to Purfleet and Rainham was a well ridden one but a new experience for me was having along cycling friends Terry and Tracey. Terry is a competent and experienced rider, partner Tracey was in her battery powered wheelchair.  Tracey whizzed along with our nice steady pace. The … Read entire article »

Jon calling Dave Fish

A big thanks to Dave F for oganising this little get together at Coalhouse on Sunday, our first meet up following our enforced absence, it was great to see everyone again… Despite the threat of spring rains, under the leafy green trees at this historic site didn’t dampen our spirits, with jolly chat and an all round happy atmosphere. I didn’t count but I guess about thirty or so of us were gathered. Tina and Phil took some snapshots, could a few of these be posted up on to the website please, it would show ‘the world’ that GWC is getting back – up and running. Further thanks to the committee for giving us all the six pound voucher for the Engine Room café eats, which worked to everyone’s satisfaction. I hope also … Read entire article »

So, slowly slowly we start a drift towards normality.

March 29th. the first step. This has widely been reported as a return to the Rule of Six (or two households) and this applies to outdoor spaces and back gardens. Obviously, this covers cycling in general. Where this has become more nuanced for cyclists, is that British Cycling has decided, that as some sports are allowed greater numbers, BC affiliated clubs will be allowed numbers up to 15 in a group. This, however, is only allowed whilst riding and at the start, stop and end points groups cannot be larger than six. And those groups of six should be fixed for the whole of the activity. They also suggested, although not stipulated, that groups take ‘a picnic’ to make the stops more manageable. This, however, comes with many caveats and many … Read entire article »

Virtual Club Night: be on Zoom instead of Zwift for one night only.

See below for an invite to a virtual club night on Friday March 12th. Imagine supping your first pint (or wine/soft drink/ Ovaltine) down the pub for the first time for months. Imagine that, while you sit at home looking at Gateway members arranged University Challenge style on your screen chatting with fellow Gateway members about the good old days; past, present and yet to come. If that’s your idea of hell, get the cellophane off that Game of Thrones DVD and settle down for the weekend. If not, then join us! It was really nice last month. Ask Bettina. She cannot tell a lie. Gateway 2020

Gateway 2020 Great name for a film. I envisage a science fiction film. A post-apocalyptic world with quiet skies save for a singing skylark fluttering down. Abandoned streets, with cars littering the pavement. Occasionally a fleeing runner moving hurriedly across the landscape. I’ve seen the films and read the books. I’ve just never been in one before. However, as in all such scripts there are some that are lucky (through genes, geography etc.), some that survive. You know, the Harrison Ford character, who, of course, has to put up with various trials and tribulations but, with a plucky smile, because, this is his time. His time to shine. Thus in 2020, when the world as we knew it started to disintegrate, and a contagion enveloped the globe, the roads emptied and the Quiet descended, cyclists … Read entire article »
