London Ride Saturday 22nd January

Dear All. I plan to take a London ride tomorrow, Saturday 22nd January 2022, meet at Grays station 08.45 taking the 09.00 train to travel to West Ham. A pleasant route to Southwark Park and the waterside cafe there for refreshment… Head back east towards Dartford, using the nice new cycleways separating riders from the traffic… and alongside parts of the Thames – depending on how we all feel… Not a great distance, about 30 miles door to door and mainly flat. Saturday looks a bit sunnier than Sunday and we need make the most of the daylight. All welcome – may see you there… Cheers! 🙂 Jon. M 07845 928 596 … Read entire article »

Gateway New Year

Gateway Cycling 2022 I am inspired by some of the recent Gateway WhatsApp comments regarding the camaraderie of the road and so this year I see a buddy road movie. I’ve loved ‘buddy movies’ since seeing ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ back in the 70s. I didn’t know it was a genre then but as the years went on, I always came out of the cinema with a warm glow after a good buddy movie. Sometimes, it would be a war movie involving self-sacrifice (see ‘Sea of Sand for the best example), but, more often than not, it would be a road movie like the classic ‘The Blues Brothers’, ‘Easy Rider’ or ‘Thelma and Louise’. The physical journey in these is usually not the important part of the film, the film … Read entire article »

Gateway Cycling’s annual New Years’ Day Ride

Gateway Cycling’s annual New Years’ Day Ride will be going ahead again… starting the new year in the perfect way – feet on the pedals and sat in the saddle…  Meet at 10.00 Blackshots Leisure Centre, Blackshots Lane, Grays RM16 2JU – near the steps. SATURDAY 1st January 2022  We’ve ridden this route many times, heading out towards the RSPB centre café at Purfleet for coffee, cake and our usual jolly festive chat. It’s along dedicated cycle ways, quite flat, a slow and easy pace for families and the less experienced rider… The route will take in the Mardyke Valley and Davy Down, only if it’s not too muddy… on to Watts Wood and the Purfleet RSPB centre. Here a choice to pedal on further for a circuit along side the marsh … Read entire article »

Wednesday Ride this week

Eleven riders assembled at Orsett this morning for usual midweek ride, this included Brian a newcomer for his first ride with us. Two more riders plus Vic and Peter joined us at the cafe. We ended up in three groups which worked out well and made one large happy mob in the marquee at Puddledock. Rather windy but otherwise not bad conditions considering it’s now December and home leg was done at a brisk pace with a mainly following wind.Brian seemed to enjoy his first ride with us and will be coming again which is good news as I think he will fit in perfectly.Crackup corner was safely negotiated today.😇 … Read entire article »
