Recreational Ride – SUNDAY 8th August 2021

Recreational Ride – SUNDAY 8th August 2021

At Barking station Sharon, Dave and I met with Terry, Roy and Chris G. Chris’s first ride with our small group… Heavy summer rain pouring down though not too windy or cold. Carefully we picked our way through the wet terraced back roads to the ‘Boris Blue Route’ running beside the A13 leading to Beckton. Here with Dave’s expert guidance and safe easy riding, we rode through green parklands on to an early coffee stop … Read entire article »

Recreational Ride – SUNDAY 8th August 2021

From Jon Lane Dear All I’m planning a ride this SUNDAY 8th August 2021, meeting at Grays station at 09.00 The weather looks better, less risk of rain. The train timetable appears to be operating normally… Two choices of route. One around the Regents Canal, coffee at Primrose Hill and onward back towards Limehouse, probably eats and coffee at the popular ‘Yurt Café’. Two. Off at Barking station, Cycle Super Highway Route 1 and a pleasant meander through East London and the café. Ride home either north or south of the Thames, maybe through the Greenwch/Woolwich tunnels and homeward. Should the weather change for the worst then the train’s an alternative. Maybe a good idea to take waterproofs… As you probably know we’ve ridden this route a few times now, slow and steady and always enjoyed ourselves … Read entire article »

KENT RIDE – TO UPNOR CASTLE – SATURDAY 21 7 2021. 09.00 TILBURY FERRY…

From Jon Lane   Dear All. Seven of us set off on the Tilbury ferry then out and up Gravesend High Street. Traffic very light due to convenient road closures and the holiday season. Picked up the parkland that was the ancient Watling Street (A2) The weather ideal, warm and not too windy. A winding route towards Sole Street, passing wheat fields with many shades of poppy and more. On through Dickens’s Cobham village, then a coffee stop at Shorne Woods Country Park. Our usual jolly and relaxing chat following the restrictions… A steady roll along Shorne Ridgeway and down the steep gradient to Upper Higham. Passing the spired church there and along Hermitage Road with the terrific views over the Thames and beyond. Along quirky back lanes ending with the steady uphill … Read entire article »

KENT RIDE – TO UPNOR CASTLE – SATURDAY 21 7 2021. 09.00 TILBURY FERRY…

Dear All. I’m planning a leisure ride to Kent, Upnor Castle this Saturday 31st July 2021. Leaving Tilbury Ferry 09.00. We’ve done this a few times and the route’s the same – fairly easy, nothing too steep… The Kings Arms pub there opens at 12pm for a very good lunch. On the way we’ll stop at Shorne Country park for a coffee. The whole route is on hard surfaces although some sections through the country lanes there’s often twigs and debris. If this is a concern for you then I suggest Gaiter skin continentals or Schwalbe marathon or similar type tyres – lessening the risk of a flat. The route back from the pub is shorter and a bit quicker. Please note. 14.00 is the last ferry sailing from Gravesend back to Tilbury, ( the crew’s lunch … Read entire article »

Gateway’s donation to Thameside Nature Park

Beautiful day for a ride to Thameside (Mucking) Visitor Centre to hand over a pump and emergency repair kit to be left on site. Jon Lane also present. The closure of the Orsett Cock roundabout and part of the old A13 actually made it a quieter ride. … Read entire article »

Bob’s Wednesday Ride with Cafe Stop

Here are some photos from Bobs Wednesday ride, taken on his video camera. It was a fairly punchy ride by everyone in the group, Dave, Peter Clarke, Ivan, Chris Milne and Frances. We set a creditable 20.5 mph average in sweltering heat, with everyone doing their bit on the front. Gateway CC meet at Orsett War Memorial Wednesdays 9.45am for a 10am depart. The club welcomes all abilities of cyclists, there is a ride for everyone during the week and at weekends. A ‘no drop ride’ means the group will set the speed based on the slowest rider. Other rides may state a minimum average speed. This helps new riders gauge / select appropriate group rides. For more information about all Gateway Rides click here … Read entire article »
