Cyclists and Horses

We have received the following email which is self-explanatory:

Hello

,I am contacting you as a horse rider in Essex, in order to ask you a favour!

Would it be possible to put a reminder on your website or other members’ correspondence asking cyclists, whether singly or in groups, to just let riders know they are there when approaching from behind.  They could either sound their bell, or call out “bike behind!” so that the horse rider is aware of their presence.  They come up so quietly that horses are often startled and can panic.

Sustrans has advice for cyclists with regard to horses, asking them to be careful and considerate, etc. but they do not make the point that it is essential that a horse rider is aware of the presence of cyclists at the earliest possible moment in order to react appropriately. I am sending this request to every cycling group I can find on the internet, so it is no reflection on your members – just a friendly reminder to anyone who will listen.

Thankyou in advance

  1. Greetings! Very useful advice in this particular post!
It is the little changes which will make the most significant changes.
    Thanks for sharing!

This is something that we do anyway (most of the time) on a club run, a similar thing was posted on a mountain bike forum last year.
